About Dog Map

Brisbane Dogs is an interactive geospatial visualization of dog registration data from Brisbane City Council. Explore where different breeds are registered across the city and discover which breeds are most popular in your suburb.

The site features two interactive views:

As dog registration is required under Queensland Government law, the data used should be the most correct source currently available.

Why

This project started in late 2018 while working at Brisbane City Council, where my role involved maintaining their Open Data website. The Animal Registrations dataset captured my imagination, it's a fascinating window into Brisbane's pet ownership patterns.

The original intent was a lighthearted blog post about dog breed distribution. While that post never made it to publication, the idea stuck around. Years later, I revisited the concept and built this interactive visualization to share the insights in a more engaging way.
